Kids Meals & More Programs
Children shouldn't have to worry about when they will have their next meal. Through several of our programs, children across our 34-county service area receive nutritious meals after school, on weekends, and during the summer.
Kids Meals & More is the umbrella for four main programs that not only offer children a meal, but so much more: Kids Cafe, Weekend Power Pack (formerly the Backpack Program), Kids Summer Meals (formerly the Summer Food Service Program), and School Pantries.
Our goal is to ensure that children have enough to eat so that they can grow into healthy and productive adults. To reach this goal we need help from the community! Organizations and businesses can underwrite all children's programs or a specific program within a branch's service area. Learn more about these wonderful child nutrition programs:
The Kids Cafe program is one of the nation’s largest charitable meal service programs providing free hot meals, nutrition education and academic support. This program represents an approach to ending childhood hunger through after-school programs; it is initiated by Feeding America, the leading national hunger relief organization, and operated locally by the Food Bank.
The Weekend Power Pack Program (formerly BackPack Program) provides discreet bags filled with weekend meals that fit inside of a child’s backpack. We provide healthy meals and snacks for children and their families to ensure children return to school on Mondays or after a long school break ready to learn. Volunteers receive the food from the Food Bank, load it into bags, and deliver it to the school or program for distribution each week.
The Kids Summer Meals Program (formerly Summer Food Service Program) provides children who participate in the free and reduced meal program at school with nutritious meals during the summer when schools are closed. Through partnership with community organizations, the Food Bank is able to provide nutritious breakfast and lunch meals in addition to supporting various enrichment activities for children such as exercise and summer reading programs.
The School Pantry program was launched in 2014 to provide families with a convenient on-campus food pantry to help meet their nutritional needs during the school year. The Food Bank provides a family food box with essentials each month to help families prepare healthy meals and stretch those household budgets further.
